If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad design
As the famous saying goes – “if you think it is expensive to hire a professional to do a job, wait until you hire an amateur!” which is true – no matter what industry you work in.
A lot of people try to save a few quid by trying to create a website themselves, with very little to no experience, or using a family friend who perhaps doesn’t have a huge amount of experience. Although this can seem like a cheaper option and can save you a few pennies, in the long run, it will cost you more.
Not User Friendly
One of the most important aspects of any website is that it is user friendly. That any potential customer, from any background and any technology level, can access your website on any platform. Whether they are using a desktop, smart phone, tablet or laptop – you should be able to find your services, your pricing and more importantly – how to contact you. There are so many websites that I have been on where I cannot find contact details, or the form doesn’t work. What happens then? I go to a competitor and you have just lost a potential customer. Before a website goes like, a designer will always check the most obvious things – ensure the website functions properly, it is visible on different platforms and all links/contact forms work properly to capture the necessary information.
Cheap Looking Design
There is nothing worse than going onto a website when you need a service and the website looks cheap and outdated. This automatically gives the potential customer the wrong impression of your business. If you don’t take good care of your website and your online existence, then they may question how you will take care of them as a customer. In 2019, web design can be very affordable – gone are the days when a web designer charges £5,000 for a simple website. Freelance web designers can be very affordable – as they often work from home and don’t have many overheads, they often reflect this in their prices so they can offer customers the best possible price available.
A lot of web designers will offer a free consultation – this may be over the phone, over Skype or even in person. This allows you to express your vision to the designer and they can discuss with you how this will work, how they will create your vision and how it can work for you. If you are unsure with the first designer you can picked, then shop around and contact a few designers to see what they can offer you. After all, it is free.
As mentioned before, you may save a few pennies in the short run by getting your uncles, dog walkers, sisters 3rd cousin to create a web site for you after they created one once in their GCSE class in 2001. It may be a quick fix, however long term, it will not work, and it will not benefit you. You want your website to represent you, to be the digital face of your brand and business. A famous art critic, John Ruskin once said: “It is unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money – that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.”
As always, if you have any questions or want any advice of your website – then please do get in touch!
